Shogun Rua wants Glover Teixeira rematch in boxing; Anderson Silva suggests ‘safer’ alternative

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua lost a decision in a boxing match with fellow UFC legend Glover Teixeira this past Saturday night in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and has already walked back on his retirement talks to ask for a rematch.

Rua, who told MMA Fighting prior to the match he would likely retire regardless of the outcome in his first bout since retiring from the UFC in January of 2023, posted a video on social media asking for an immediate rematch in Spaten Fight Night.

“Because a true warrior never gives up,” Rua said. “Guys, I think the fairest thing would be a rematch, Glover and I on the next Spaten event, because it was an absolute war. You guys saw it. He dropped me in the second round. Glover was really rocked in the fifth round.

“So, guys, I think I deserve that rematch at the next Spaten. What do you think? You watching from home, what do you guys think? Glover, are you up for one more?”

Rua’s former teammate Anderson Silva weighed in on the callout in the comment section of the Instagram post, advising “Shogun” to stop competing in sports that involve strikes.

“Do it with the gi,” Silva wrote. “Jiu-jitsu is safer, brother. You have nothing to prove to anyone, you have a lot of history.”

Teixeira plans to continue competing in 2027, and is interested in facing Alexander Gustafsson in a boxing ring after Gustafsson’s team told MMA Fighting they are up for the task. Teixeira also cited a “charity match” with Jan Blachowicz in a post-fight interview with Globo.

“Let’s keep training and see what’s happening,” Teixeira told MMA Fighting on Saturday. “Three and a half years out, maybe a little ring rust, maybe going too much, but I think now, if I have a fight in the next six months or so, maybe I’ll be better.”
